Brie & Mushroom Tuna Steaks

WOW, has it really been a month since I've cooked for the blog? May has been a whirlwind of a month. We've had lots of ballet activities, a trip out of town, and celebrated Marley's 4th birthday. I threw her a cowgirl party this year. I learned after her first birthday and the ridiculous menu I came up with to start keeping the parties simple. So no blog meal for her birthday since I'm sure you all know how to grill hot dogs and serve store bought effortless sides. HAHA!
So now that summer is unofficially here (marked by Memorial Day,) it's time to share a dish I learned one summer years ago while I was attending Culinary Art classes through the University of Richmond. Brie & Mushroom Tuna Steaks, need I say more?! And it's surprisingly simple.

Recipe continued after the jump...

Get these ingredients together:

  • 2 tuna steaks
  • 1 Vidalia onion
  • 6 medium white mushrooms
  • Brie
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 4 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground sage
  • S&P

Steps to make this YUMMY dish:
1. Preheat oven to 300° (the tuna steaks will be broiled but you want a warm oven before you broil.)
2. Cut the rind off your brie and slice the cheese into thick pieces. (Tip: spray your knife with Pam or Canola cooking spray before slicing to keep your knife from sticking to the soft cheese.)
3. Clean your mushrooms using a clean damp cloth and gently wiping them off to remove any dirt.
4. Slice your mushrooms and onion. And chop your garlic clove.
5. In an oven proof pan heated to med-high, add 1 tsp butter and 2 tsp olive oil. Once the butter is melted, toss in the garlic, mushrooms and onions. Sauté the mushrooms and onions about 10 minutes until golden brown. Set aside...
6. Pat your tuna steaks dry with a clean paper towel to get a good sear. Sprinkle the sage, and some S&P over both sides of your tuna.
7. Add 1 tsp butter and 2 tsp olive oil to your pan. Once the butter is melted, place in the tuna steaks.
8. Sear each side for 3 minutes. Flip them only once to turn them.
9. Once seared, top the tuna with the sauteed mushrooms and onions. Then place the slices of brie over the mushroom toppings.
10. Turn your oven to Lo-Broil and place the pan in the oven for about 5 minutes until the brie is melted. (Don't walk away; keep an eye on your broiler because this will go quickly.)

Serve immediately and ENJOY! (I served my tuna steaks with creamy parmesan mixed rice and green beans.)
